One of the longest running rumors so far, Apple might actually not embed its fingerprint scanning tech under the screen of the iPhone 8, but what could be the solution?
With September almost here, Apple seems to have run out of time to get the embedded technology ready. According to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is abandoning the idea until next year. In an investor note seen by AppleInsider, it is not clear when Apple accepted defeat on getting the technology right, and there seems to be talk that the iPhone 8 could use a small pinhole or thinned glass to get the technology working through layers of glass.
We still dont know where the sensor could be now. One patent suggests that it might be embedded into the power button, which is a better option than being all the way around at the back. It is not a disaster as such, but it means that you will have to pick up the phone to unlock it.
On the other hand, there are chances that Apple might use face recognition instead, as references to 3D face-scanning technology have been spotted in earlier rumors. We will know for sure once the phone is announced in September.
