Testbed and Benchmarks

We tested the ASUS Strix X299-E Gaming motherboard by using the latest Intel i7-7820X. The processor consists of eight cores and sixteen threads in total, with speeds set at 3.6 GHz in base mode and 4.3 GHz at Turbo mode. We also performed separate benchmarks by selecting an OC Profile (27% performance boost) from the BIOS of the motherboard. RAM includes 2 x 8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 modules, and the graphics card we used is the ASUS Strix GTX 1080 Ti that we recently reviewed. We will be pitting the final CPU benchmark and gaming performance against our AMD Ryzen 7 1700 testbed for the sake of comparison.

It’s clear here that Intel’s latest 8-core chip overtakes the likes of AMD’s cheapest 8-core Ryzen 7 1700, although, the gap would have been closer if we used the Ryzen 1700X/1800X instead. That said, the overclocked performance of the i7-7820X goes way ahead. We are also really impressed on how the new heatsink solution of the Strix X299-E Gaming kept the Samsung 850 Pro cool under heavy load. Without the heatsink, the 850 Pro stayed at 66-degrees and when we used the heatsink, the temperatures went down to 47-degrees. That’s almost the same as ASUS had claimed. The write speeds with the heatsink is also higher by 96MB/s.

Game Benchmarks at 1080p

Game Benchmarks at 2160p

In terms of gaming, the Intel i7-7820X performs slightly better (6fps on average) on most of the games at 1080p resolution. However, in some games like Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordar, we saw an almost 20fps increase. Surprisingly, the Ryzen 7 1700 performed slightly better than the i7-7820X for 4K UHD gaming- where the GPU does more work than the CPU. Mind you that all these games were tested with the same ASUS Strix GTX 1080 Ti OC graphics card. Rest assured, the Intel chip does work very good for gaming with the ASUS Strix X299-E Gaming motherboard.

Verdict

The ASUS Strix X299-E Gaming is a great motherboard for those planning to upgrade their systems with the latest of Intel X-series processors. It offers a slew of features for customization like the multiple AURA RGB headers and the addressable header if you want to get creative with lighting and colors. While there are still many flagship motherboards out there that doesn’t offer any kind of cooling for M.2 heatsinks, the inclusion of the new M.2 heatsink is one of my most favorite features of this motherboard, period.

The ASUS Strix X299-E Gaming is stylish for sure, which is something ASUS is already good at, and the product comes with a lot of useful accessories within the package with a decent price to match.

The ASUS Strix X299-E Gaming motherboard is priced at AED 1372 in the UAE.
