Alienware’s M11x used to hold the crown for the smallest Alienware laptop balancing the need for portability and performance well until Dell discontinued it back in 2012. Considering the success of thin and light gaming laptops from Razer, Origin and Gigabyte, Dell has decided to re-enter that market but with the Alienware 13 which will weigh around 4.5 pounds – almost two pounds shy from its bigger sibling Alienware 14.
Compared to competition, Alienware 13 will have a 13 inch touch panel with a resolution of 2560 x 1140 with options to choose a non-touch 1080p or 1366 x 768 display instead. The laptop will feature NVIDIA’s GTX 860M GPU, which is good enough for most demanding games to run at full settings at 1080p resolution, but gamers will have to crank down the game settings if they’ve opted for the 2560 x 1140 resolution.
One area of concern is that Dell is switching to low voltage processors instead of full blown versions which may increase battery life, but they’re not the best when it comes to gaming. The battery is reported to run up to 8 hours of video playback, but that surely will reduce during gaming sessions. No news on pricing yet, but expected availability is somewhere around November 2014.
