Maker Day Dubai

Held on March 23, 2013 at Dubai Silicon Oasis Cedre Shopping Center

Maker Day Dubai Press Release

We are pleased to announce that GEMS Education and the Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority will be hosting their first “Maker Day Dubai” event on March 23rd from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Dubai Silicon Oasis Cedre Shopping Center.

Maker Day is a community celebration of innovation and creativity and we would like to invite YOU to join us, as a maker, entertainer, or visitor.

What is a maker?

A maker can be any person or group, who invents, designs, creates, and/or builds anything with the goal of learning, teaching, inspiring, or improving the state of their community or world. Tinker with robots at home? Launch marshmallow rockets? Design your own clothes or cards? Invent things? Decorate cakes? Make mini-figurines? Well, then you are a maker! Makers can create things that are useful, fun, or just quirky.

What will the Maker Day Dubai look like?

We will have display spaces for up to one hundred makers. Most will be outdoors, but some indoor space is also available. Makers will display their innovation and provide a hands-on experience for visitors. In addition to makers, expect to find art installations being created before your eyes, original music, and spaces to try out making things, such as a Lego Lounge and Cardboard Arcade corner.

How should I prepare for the Maker Day?

Please click on the link above to register by February 26th. Then plan a simple, fun activity for visitors to your stall. Examples might include making something from recycled materials, trying out a robot, decorating a cupcake, making a balloon rocket, testing your personally designed app or video game. If you create a make-and-take activity, you may charge a small materials fee, up to 5 AED.

Is this a craft show?

It’s more of an “everything creative show” and crafts are welcome, as are rockets, robots, art installations, performances, upcycling ideas, science projects and more.

Can I sell my product at the Maker Day?

Yes, although anything you sell must be made by you and the focus of your stall should be more on educating visitors about how you make your items. The fee to sell products at your stall is 120 AED. If you are not selling anything, your table will be free of charge. The table fee is not applicable to stalls charging 5 AED or less for make-and-take activities, as long as the money charged only covers the cost of materials. For example, a maker selling mini-figurines for 20 AED would need to pay a table fee; however, a maker charging 3 AED per person to make a balloon rocket would not.

Will prizes be given?

Maker Day Dubai is not a competition; however, visitors will be allowed to cast votes for maker stalls in categories such as the most innovative, most surprising, most beautiful, most useful and the best use of recycled materials.

All applications are subject to the approval of the Maker Day Dubai committee.
