Okay guys does any of you have the Etisalat's cable broadband? I have a friend who has this and he ended up buying a linksys broadband router - Linksys by Cisco Wireless-G Broadband Router WRT54G2

He doesn't seem to get an IP on the linksys router from Etisalats gateway. Any special config/setup required here?

Currently this is how it is setup:

He has his Etisalat cable gateway and the coaxial cable goes in there. He then connects an RJ45 to the linksys "Internet" port and then the RJ45 from the linksys to the pc. He gets his DHCP ip's from linksys to his machines fine but his linksys router does not get an ip from etisalats cable gateway.

Is there something missing? I dont have cable broadband and dont know anyone who has it either.

Any help appreciated.

Yes, you have to set the router's MAC address to the PC's MAC. This is because Etisalat registers the MAC address when you first connect. It won't let you connect again unless you either re-register with Etisalat or you go back to the previous MAC. The Linksys router has a feature through the browser-based config which will let you do this.

hey dude thanks for the reply. He has tried the MAC cloning but the router just tries to keep connecting but doesn't really connect. What's your Internet Connection Type? PPPoE? I thought Al Shamil supports only PPPoA.

Thanks for any help!

The connection type depends on your location. Some places use PPPoE and some use PPPoA but I'm not sure that applies to cable connections. Does directly connecting the PC to the modem still work?

Yep directly works fine. The linksys router does not seem to get an IP from the modem. I read somewhere that Al shamil only supports PPPoA and not PPPoE. Guys at the Etisalat help desk are pretty useless and wont support any router that isn't bought from them.

I'm not sure what else to say. It was fairly simple when I set it up apart from the MAC address issue. Maybe try restarting the modem?
