Olympus Has Fallen was what Die Hard 5 should have been.

So this week I got to see the new Gerard Butler film ‘Olympus Has Fallen’ and it was surprisingly a very good action movie experience. But the one thing that really stuck with me was how the film was the best Die Hard film I’ve seen in a long time.

For the best enjoyment of the film, replace Gerard Butler’s character with John Mclane and you have what Die Hard 5 should have been. The perfect contained action movie set up is there - the White House gets taken over by terrorists and one guy inside is picking them one by one and saving the country. It was everything I wanted the last 2 Die Hard sequels to be, but they veered instead into generic action movie territory and walked away from the format the series created itself.

Die Hard 5 was enjoyable as a B-movie like action movie, but it was terrible as a Die Hard experience. Thankfully, OHF now exists as a replacement for those still craving that kind of film.

It’s the best action film of the year so far.

Anyone seen it? Thoughts?
