Erm, so the Prototype iPhone Looked Like This

When Steve Jobs unveiled the first iPhone in 2007, everyone was left mesmerized by its sleek and compact design. But as you would imagine, a product's final design rarely looks like its prototypes. In the case of the iPhone, it looked like a large, ungainly iPad. Funny thing, eh?

A former Apple employee shared pictures of the first iPhone prototype with Ars Technica, showing a device that's 5-by-7 inches big, and is a whopping 2-inches thick. Interestingly, it features USB ports, an Ethernet jack, and a serial port - things that never made it into the final product, and probably never will.

"Seems large now," the former employee told Ars. "But at the time, it was really impressive seeing basically a version of OS X running on it."

We can only imagine. Check out the article for more pictures.
