Firefox Smartphones Are Coming

We know for a while that Mozilla plans to venture into the smartphone business. Today at MWC, the company announced that it will debut its first Firefox OS-powered device later this year.

It won't be a worldwide release, but a burst launch in a select few countries, including Brazil, Colombia, Hungary, Mexico, Montenegro, Serbia, Spain and Venezula. Mozilla has partnered with Alcatel, LG and ZTE to produce the phones, with 17 wireless operators around the world to sell them.

The Firefox smartphones will come equipped with a version of Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor, and a Firefox Marketplace to download HTML5-based apps.

Mozilla hasn't revealed when the smartphones will be available worldwide. A US launch is expected sometime in 2014.
