How Search Works – Google explains

‘How Search Works’ is a new animated website just launched by Google. It explains what happens in the milliseconds between putting in your search query in the Google search bar and the results popping up. But it’s Google, so the explanation is prettied up in the form of a colorful interactive scrolling graphic.

The behind the scenes look at the life of a search query has 3 parts – crawling and indexing, algorithms and fighting spam. A look at how Google fights spam is particularly interesting as it includes live updates of screenshots of sites the company has deemed spam. The site is also peppered with search trivia (the web has over 30 trillion pages??) and information graphs.

The new site is similar to Google’s previous ‘Story of Send’, which also made a complicated process, easy to understand with cutesy graphics and sound effects.

Check out the fascinating site here.
