iPhone 5S & Galaxy S4 could bring wireless charging to the masses
While Nokia's Lumia 920 was one of the first major smartphones to come out with wireless charging, it's most likely that Apple and Samsung will be the harbingers of wireless charging in every household with their upcoming flagship smartphones. Both the iPhone 5S and Samsung's Galaxy S4 are expected to come out with wireless charging modules, according to DigiTimes.
Admittedly the wireless chargers will come as optional extras, much like the recently released Lumia 920 & 820. And while Nokia, Samsung, LG, HTC, Motorola and Sony are all members of the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) and use a global standard wireless charger, Apple is supposedly coming up with a proprietary solution for their iOS devices. The situation will be similar to what we see nowadays with the Apple Lightning adapter for iOS devices versus the micro-USB charger used by pretty much every smartphone maker in the world.
While we'll know about what Samsung has in store for us with the Galaxy S4 in just 4 days, we'll have to wait until April or August to see what sort of wireless charging solution Apple uses.
