Kim Dotcom launches Mega with 50GB free cloud storage

After the FBI effectively shut down one of the biggest filesharing websites online Megaupload.com, the founder Kim Dotcom isn't one to hold back and retire. In fact, he's been touting a brand new service called Mega that would be his comeback into the internet game. And today, he officially opened the website for the public to a shattering response.

Think of Mega like a hybrid between Dropbox and Google Drive with a number of other cool features and a lot more storage with the free plan. The cloud storage service offers free users a whopping 50GB of free cloud storage space for their personal files of any kind. If that wasn't even to trump Dropbox's 2GB free space out of the water, they also have in-built office capabilities which will allow you to edit Word, Excel and Powerpoint documents inside the browser itself the way Google Drive allows you to do. For a low monthly fees, you can also upgrade to premium packages that are much more value for money than what other competitors offer. Keep in mind that the domain is http://mega.co.nz and not Mega.com, presumably so that the US authorities can never take it down like they did to Megaupload. It was also a hugely successful launch which saw 250,000 registrations to date and crashed the servers for a lot of people, much to the delight of Dotcom himself.

But despite the amazing services on offer, one thing to keep in mind is reliability. After a lot of people losing their data permanently with Megaupload that hasn't still come online thanks to a very complex court case, would you trust your important files with another website by the same founder? For me, it definitely works as a secondary cloud service but I'll stick to Dropbox for my crucial documents for now.
