LG set to buy webOS from HP
In a surprising announcement today at MWC, LG said that it would be purchasing WebOS from HP, in a bid to use the OS in their upcoming lineup of smart televisions. WebOS was first picked up by HP but faced a quick death in the company's failed TouchPad tablet, following which HP soon relegated WebOS to be an open source project.
But LG have no plans on using WebOS in any of their other devices, having firmly gone the way of Android for their smartphones. The purchase from HP means that LG will obtain all of the various patents, source code, documentation, and related WebOS websites, though no financial information is available for the moment.
It almost seems like WebOS has been passed around far too many times already, but hopefully LG will be able to use the OS in a much better way than HP ever did.
