Piston’s Steam Box Cost $1000
Piston said today it will be launching its own version of Steam Box, the Xi3, this holiday season. Price? A solid $999. The standard model will come equipped with a 128GB SSD drive, however you can purchase a 256GB SSD version for an additional $340, and a 512GB SSD for $750.
Piston is the first PC designed specifically to play games using Steam's Big Picture mode, a HDTV-friendly version of Valve's popular games distribution platform. The Xi3 will be among the many planned Steam Box'es to release this year and next. Valve is planning to release their own version this year, as well.
"Clearly, the computer/video gaming market is huge, both in the personal computer and traditional console markets," Xi3 CEO Jason Sullivan said in a press release. "That being said, we believe there is a crying need for a machine that captures the best of both worlds, with the upgradeability of computer gaming rigs and the design and form factor of consoles. We believe our Piston Consoles do exactly that-deliver the beauty and small size of consoles with the upgradeability of computers."
At $999, the Xi3 Steam Box directly appeals to gamers who are looking build a PC for cheap, however it's far more expensive to attract console gamers who are not used to pay more than $600 for a console.
