The combination of using standard 512MB configuration with a 65nm GPU and single slot cooling has allowed nVidia to lower the production costs of the 8800GT which should be selling between US$250-$300. Other than improved video playback trough VP2 engine, G92 doesn't bring any new and revolutionary technologies to the table. It lacks DirectX 10.1 support, but having in mind that we have yet to see games with full use of DX10, we can't take that as a true down-side when it comes to recommending this product.
Overall, we were very satisfied by 8800GT performance which proved to be faster than 2900XT and GeForce 8800GTS, while keeping on par with 8800GTX. We know that nVidia is planning to make more changes to its high-end lineup before year's end, but if you are in market for a new card today, 8800GT comes as a no brainer. Therefore, we award MSI 8800GT-512MB graphics card with our "Recommended Product" award.
In the next couple of days, we'll publish more GeForce 8800GT benchmarks with SLI performance examined as well.
