There has certainly been no shortage of new core logic chipsets and adding to that is the recently launched Intel’s Springdale chipset. While Canterwood boards are identifiable with the 875 moniker, Springdale based motherboards will be identifiable by the 865 moniker followed by either the P, PE or G designation.
The 865P is the cheapest chipset of the bunch and lacks support for the newer 800MHz FSB based Pentium 4 processors. Additionally, memory speed support only extends up to DDR333 which makes sense really as the chipset doesn’t work with the newer 800MHz FSB based Pentium 4 processors anyway. The 865PE is essentially a beefed up version of the 865P in that it supports DDR400 memory while also carrying official support for the 800MHz FSB based Pentium 4 processors. Finally the 865G chipset is you guessed it an 865PE with an integrated graphics chipset.
In all, the only real feature actually missing from the Springdale chipset when compared to the more expensive Canterwood chipset is Intel’s Performance Acceleration Technology. However, Intel intended the 865 series to compete in the mainstream market as one looks at the price of Canterwood motherboards will make most people cringe. For today, we have Epox’s EP-4PDA2+ motherboard based on the PE version of the Springdale chipset.
