Tech Predictions for 2008 : Number 5 and 4

So we’ve reached the last month of 2007 and I decided to write an article on how I think some things will shape up in the tech world in 2008. This is the first time I’m doing such an article and hopefully, we’ll be able to compare how I did at the end of next year. Until then, enjoy and leave your comments.

5) Vista might finally become usable

I'm still not 100% sure on this one because my current Quad Core system with 4GB RAM, an 8800GTS graphics card and 320GB hard drive tests my patience every day I was use Vista. The continuous hard drive grinding drives me crazy and the time it takes to load and exit out of a game is enough to drive back and forth on Sheikh Zayed road during peak hours. Needless to say, I switched back to Windows XP which, after Vista, feels like its flying.

With Vista SP1 due shortly, it should hopefully get better and copying files from a USB drive should take seconds instead of minutes but I wont turn into a believer until I experience it myself- especially with XP SP3 coming out as well which is promising to make XP even faster. I’m not sure on what went wrong with Vista but Redmond is certainly not run by fools- oh wait, Ballmer is still the CEO. Damn it.

4) Apple will continue doing what its best at- make noise

Whether you lke him or not, Steve Jobs is certainly the most charismatic leader in the IT industry. There is no other tech company that ignites as much passion as Apple does. Personally, I’m a big fan- in fact, this article is being written on a MacBook Pro with my Mac Pro at Home and a Mini in the office. Apple will certainly make significant gains with their computers, however, 2008 will not be a year when and if they ever become mainstream. Microsoft's share of Operating System is at a massive 90%+ and you need at least three consecutive turkeys like Vista to turn the tide.

The iPhone will make a bigger dent in the market share than Apple’s computers, however, Apple needs to address a lot of features targeted towards the suited/booted user to put the iPhone in more hands. While AT&T’s CEO spoke about a 3G unit next year, OTA syncing as well as a full featured Office suite of applications must be included on the iPhone.
