Graphics cards aren’t about just graphics anymore. That sounds a bit weird but over the years, we’ve seen this change coming. About ten years back, we were wowed by 3DFX and their Voodoo series of graphics accelerators. A few years later, these add-on cards were integrated with your primary display cards. We then saw the introduction of GPGPU which gave us a first glimpse of the graphics card entering CPU territory. Next came the Hi-Def craze with LCDs and HDMI connectors and we saw Graphics cards handling audio as well. Graphics cards aren’t just about graphics anymore.

With the release of nVidia’s latest GTX 200 platform today, we see a possibility of tremendous change one more time- although its more on the lines of evolutionary than revolutionary. The GPU continues its war against the CPU with nVidia delivering the CUDA platform that allows your graphics card to offload a lot more stuff from the CPU in a much easier fashion. And its bitchin fast for gaming as well. Lets say hello to the two lovely ladies- the nVidia GeForce GTX 260 and the GTX 280.

Although nVidia is unveiling the GTX 260 and GTX 280 cards, we’re only looking at the GTX 280 in a single card configuration. Hopefully in the next few weeks, we will be able to look at the GTX 260 as well as SLI and Triple SLI performance.
